Spartans with some paint

The painting project has begun, with Tim, Alex and I all painting up our Impetus Army. Alex's has finally arrived (which he can fill you in on) and Tim is fighting it out with LBMS shield transfers (they don't get along it seems).

As for me? Well I have been painting. Here is a close up of one of my first Spartans

The photo is not all that great, but it does give you a good idea for how they will look! Not the greatest painted Spartans in the world, but they will do the business all ranked up.

Speaking of ranked up, this is where my first Large Unit is at...

There are 9 painted, with 9 more to go. I have undercoated the rest, and painting has started. Hoping to get the whole lot done by the end of the week, then I can start the next unit!

Race you to a Basic Impetus army Tim!

A response to the Athenian posturing...

So, the Athenians have been posting army lists, and have already begun to form their armies.

In light of such aggresive actions, the only possible response for Sparta is to respond in kind.

My planned 400 point list looks something like this...

Good Command Structure (20)
1 Re-Roll- (5)

Good General (20 pts)
Spartan Hoplite (VBU 6)- Large Unit- (53)
Spartan Hoplite (VBU 6)- Small Unit- (33)
Allied Hoplite (VBU 5)- Large Unit- (39)
Peltasts (VBU 4)- (20)
Skitari (VBU 3)- (17)

Good General (20 pts)
Spartan Hoplite (VBU 6)- Large Unit- (53)
Allied Hoplite (VBU 5)- Large Unit- (39)
Greek Cavalry- (VBU 4)- Hamippoi- (26)
Greek Cavalry- (VBU 4)- Hamippoi- (26)
Slingers- (VBU 2)- (12)
Skitari (VBU 3)- (17)

While it might not be in as fancy a table as those Athenians, it tells you all you need to know (in spartan style!). I have some thoughts about using lost of small units of the Disc A Spartans, but I am thinking that this is a good starting point for the army.

And as for starting to build an army, the first Spartans are on the painting table!

So. The Plan.

Or.. “The worst idea since someone said ‘yeah let’s take this suspiciously large wooden horse into Troy, statues are all the rage this season’.” (Blackadder says it best)

The whole idea of this stems from the fact that Prinny, McZermof and I are terrible at finishing stuff.

Like most (all?) gamers, we have boxes and boxes of unfinished, half started, finished but now I hate it, "finished and I like it but no one plays the game any more" or "pretty sure I ordered that when I was drunk" armies.

Clearly the only option then was to buy a new army, ACTUALLY FINISH IT and then show it off as how good we are at finishing stuff.

My army of choice?

Hoplites!

Prinny and I had been musing over how cool a Greek army would be in Impetus, and this will be the chance to actually do it. I will take the side of the righteous, brave and all around bestest Spartans, Prinny is planning some Athenians and I think McZermof is going totally left field, and bringing Teutonic Knights.

Our plan is to make a 400 point army of our chosen force, and have it done for a competition this year called Veni Vidi Vici, or V3 for short. The competition is run later this year, so there is a bit of time to paint! Prinny and I have been thinking about building it up to 500 points, because to be honest, it is only an extra couple of Hoplite bases!

My starting point is a box and a half of the Victrix plastic hoplites, along with a whole host of the Little Big Men Studios shield transfers. Conveniently, these arrived this week, so I am planning to get on to assembling my first base tonight.

Now, we will play other forms of Impetus too, especially me as I need to learn how to play the game so that I can not look like a total idiot at V3 later this year!

That is enough for now,
